A familiar road can still be full of surprises.
Joe Jacek loves his life...for the most part.

He feels bad that his father didn’t leave the ranch to him and his brother Trent both, but Joe would never short his brother out of his inheritance. Lucky for them, they’re close brothers. On the surface this is the story of a shifter, his human lover, and the lover's brother, who is determined to assist them in confronting the dark danger they know will come to take the shifter away. On a deeper level, this is a story about the power of love and the unimaginable and powerful changes that can take place within a person when their primary motivation is love.All three of the main characters have been abused and beaten down, both mentally and physically, either by wolves or humans. While the methods of abuse varied between the wolves and humans, there were huge similarities in the resulting damage to their spirit that the characters had to overcome. Interesting concept.
Woven throughout the story is beautiful m/m, Dominate/submissive sex between two of the characters, and going along with that is a solid understanding that this is what the characters want, need and have agree to.

A different take on a shifter story. I welcomed that.
It was relatively short but a lot happened in the story than i didn't really care about the length. I could tell there's going to be a sequel so that did much to alleivate any annoyances to some unresolved plots. Like Trent. I want his story.
The two brothers are very close. Both are gay which would have their father sh**ing bricks. One night , driving back from a night out , Joe ends up encountering a wolf. Only it's not just a wolf. He's also a man. They way they met was funny and a nice change. When the wolf man (i won't mention his name because it adds to the enigma of said shifter) ends up in Joe's house it defines the word awkward but then turns to smoldering and oh my goodness yes. It was pretty intense.
But wolife brings with him some serious scars and a very trouble life. He's not safe and neither are the brothers. I loved how they embraced him in their though. How Trent was quick to defend his brother's lover and how Joe wasn't willing to let go of the shifter. Now that they found each other he'd be damned if someone was going to try and take him away from the man he came to love.
(Some darkness to the story. Aggressive sex. BDSM themes.)
The story is interesting but there'a a hardness and anger in the characters and in the sex. The reader should be informed that the rough sex extends until it includes fisting. It was not anticipated and added nothing to the story.
Bailey Bradford is an author I keep an eye on. I've read a few of her series and she delivers a good shifter story with a solid plot.
In Dark Nights and Headlights the focus is on Joe, his life, his ranch, and how alone he feels. We learn of Joe's past including his upbringing, his father and how he influenced his life, his brother Trent, and now that Joey is 40. . . What he wants for the rest of his life.
Enter Diego, a wolf shifter and omega. The back and forth between Joe and Diego was well done and so original. Diego has a tortured past that he ran from, he is a lone wolf, alone, and still on the run from his abusive pack. We learn just as much if not more on Diego and his life experiences which brought him onto Joe's land.
From a fascination to an attraction. . . I wouldn't call it a romance between the two men, more of needs met since both had been without someone. Diego came into the relationship with never having a tender touch. Joe came from knowing his sexual needs and never being able to meet them, instead having casual hook ups that were never fulfilling. Remember Joe lives on a ranch outside a small Texas town. As they say, picking are slim. Well, pretty well non-existent.
Was the sex rough? Yes. Part of that is due to Joe being so dominate but he also had his tender moments. Part of that was also due to Diego being a wolf shifter and he wanted pain, his needs weren't met without some pain. Did I think the rough sex was overdone? No. Not when you consider the background on these two men -- And as I said before, they were well developed and characterized so that you understand their needs and where their heads are when they're romping. There were enough phrases of safe words, double checking with what was done, a verbal interaction so that things weren't taken too far. There was always consent. The road to Diego and Joe being together wasn't easy but the trip was well worth it. They do reach their HEA.
Since I read this story and continued into the second one -- A lot of the background on this story prepares for the plot in the next. Personally I wanted to know what happened to Joe's brother, Trent. He was the backbone of the two, the one that joked around and brought a lot of enjoyment to this story. Anyway, for a over 200 page relaxing shifter read, this one was very enjoyable. - Dan's Wife
